Public Housing

If you are eligible and in need of housing and would like to be in caring community, numerous social events, multiple professional opportunities, and a staff driven to a philosophy of providing more than just housing, apply for BHA’s Public Housing.

BHA owns and operates 312 units of conventional public housing in three developments: Crestmont, Reverend Butler and Walnut Woods Apartments. All three sites are a mix of single story and town house units with efficiencies through five bedroom units. Residents living in our affordable housing have a wide variety of services available to them.

Housing Choice Voucher (HCV or Section 8)

Through the HCV Program, BHA pays a portion of eligible families’ rent each month directly to the landlord. Families can use their vouchers to rent a house or apartment in the private market throughout Monroe County.

For Public Housing Applicants (IMPORTANT): After submitting the online application, a second set of documents (“Step 2”) needs to be completed by the applicant household members and submitted to the BHA Main Office (deliver or mail to 1007 N Summit Street, Bloomington, IN 47404 or fax to 812-339-7177) as soon as possible. The family should carefully read the cover sheet on the Step 2 documents to ensure all verifications for family members, proof of income, preference point verifications, proof of assets and other pertinent information are submitted correctly. Applications with missing or falsified information may be denied.

Step 2 of the application can be accessed by clicking the blue “Public Housing Application: Part 2” button below.

Once you have completed Step 2 of the application, you may save the document to your computer, tablet, or smartphone and then email the document to ewash@blha.net.  If you are completing the form using your smartphone, it is recommended that you use the Adobe Fill and Sign app available for free from the Google Play Store and/or Apple App Store.

You may also print the document and mail to 1007 N. Summit Street, Bloomington, IN 47404.  Step 2 of the application is also available for pickup at the entrance of the BHA main office.

All required documentation can be emailed to ewash@blha.net.  If you are not able to send the form or the required documentation via email please call the office at 812-339-3491 at Extension 113 for instructions of other acceptable methods of delivery.

Applicants may check their status on the waitlist by clicking here or by calling 855 868-6739. Please note it may take 30 to 60 days for your application to be processed and appear in the waitlist check system.

Need Assistance Applying?

Accommodations for assisting applicants with the online application will be made on Thursday and Friday afternoons in the BHA Community Building computer lab (1002 North Summitt Street, Bloomington, IN 47404). Thursday computer lab hours are from Noon to 3:00 PM. Friday computer lab hours are from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A BHA staff person will be available to assist with applying online.
